Etymology

The Arabs used to write in the tomar script, and the tomar was a specific and large paper, so it required that the calligrapher’s reed be proportional to the size of the paper. The width of the reed was 18 strands of Turkmen horse hair. But they saw that the line was wider than necessary, so they shortened a third of it and kept 12 hairs and called it the thirds line, after which they shortened the second third to 8 hairs and called it the third line.
